    OVERVIEW

“For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that people are without excuse.” Romans 1:20

The Bible states that all of Creation testifies of the character of its Creator. For this reason we will travel together, in awe and wonder, to the magnificent and untouched Antarctic Peninsula. From shorelines teeming with penguins, colossal icebergs that tower over you, frigid seas rife with marine life to silent, eerie snowscapes that will leave you breathless, Antarctica is everything you expect. Sail from King George Island, and experience the very best that the white continent has to offer.

Tim and Merridie Costello are Aussie gems. We have had the joy of having them lead 3 biblical tours of Greece and Turkiye from 2019-2024.

Tim worked with World Vision Australia for 15 years. He is now the Executive Director of Micah Australia and a Senior Fellow for Centre for Public Christianity. Merridie has worked in pastoral care and Chaplaincy.

Tim and Merridie lived and studied theology in Europe for 3.5 years in the 1980’s where their interest in the Reformation and especially, as good Baptists, the Radical Reformation flourished. They both love history and theology.

The Costellos will lead daily devotions and a Sunday service on board the expedition.

    ITINERARY

Our flight today is to Santiago, Chile. Both Qantas and LATAM fly from Melbourne/Sydney to Santiago. Exact flight schedules and pricing will be released in late March 2026.
On arrival transfer to the hotel for an overnight stay (transfer not included in the tour price).

Hotel: Mandarin Oriental, Santiago or similar

    Included Meals: None

Check out of the hotel in Santiago and transfer to the airport for our flight in Puerto Williams.

Puerto Williams is a Chilean city located on Navarino Island on the southern shores of the Beagle Channel. It claims to be the “southernmost city in the world”, however owing to its small size – 2500 residents approximately – the much larger Argentinean city of Ushuaia, which sits on the northern side of the same channel, also claims that title. The surrounding scenery is magnificent. The wild windswept mountains rise above the tree line and are regularly dusted with snow. The city itself has the dramatic backdrop called “Dientes de Navarino” (literally “teeth of Navarino”), which rival the famous Torres del Paine further to the north. The area was originally used by the Yaghan people, hunter-gatherers who despite enduring the harsh regional climate, could not weather the arrival of Europeans. The current city was established as a naval base in 1953 and honours the British-Chilean naval commander John Williams Wilson of the 16th century. Initially it served to protect territorial possessions and fishing rights of the area, as well as offering logistical support to Antarctic bases. More recently it has become a departure point for scientific and tourism trips to the Antarctic region. In contrast to the bustle and traffic of a very commercial Ushuaia, Puerto Williams offers a quieter, more relaxed experience. It charms the visitor with a small village feel, complete with rustic buildings and the homely smell of drifting wood smoke. A haven of peace at the end of the world.

On arrival we will check in to our hotel for the evening, a purpose-built development by Silversea, designed especially for those embarking on Antarctic journeys.

Hotel: Silversea Hotel, Puerto Williams (still under construction)

    Included Meals:

    B
    D
Today we take the final leg of our journey towards Antarctica, travelling by charter flight from Puerto Williams, to King Goerge Island.
Antarctica’s gateway nestled in the South Shetland Islands.

On arrival, we will board Silversea’s Silver Wind. Home for the next 9 nights.

    Included Meals:

    B
    D
Few voyages ignite the imagination like a journey down to one of the planet’s most remote, extreme and enchanting wilderness, Antarctica. An adventure in its purest form, only a handful of people will ever be lucky enough to experience the majestic beauty of these monochrome landscapes first-hand. The Antarctic Sound will be one of your first encounters of this whitewash kingdom, located at the northerly tip of the Antarctic Peninsula - which sprawls up like a tentacle towards Tierra del Fuego, South America’s most southerly point, otherwise known as the ‘End of the World’. Taking its name from the first ship to brave the passageway between the peninsular and the Joinville Island groups back in 1902, the Sound is a raw, sensory assault of imposing iceberg slabs, broken away from the disintegrating Larsen Ice Shelf. Come face-to-face with stadium-sized islands of ice and meet the extraordinary birdlife that call this whitewash kingdom home. Watch on, as colonies of Gentoo penguins hop around, and cape petrels sweep overhead, as the continent’s unique wildlife thrives around you. If you’re planning your first venture into Antarctica, you’ll want to brush up on your photography skills in advance, to capture this unforgiving continent in all of its unrestrained glory.

There is a great rhythm on board the ship with morning and afternoon excursions on offer, with time in the middle of the day for lunch, onboard activities or even a nap!

Each evening we meet in the Explorers Lounge to recap the experiences of the day and hear all about the plans for the following day. Then chose to dine in one of the restaurants, or enjoy room service in your cabin.

    Included Meals:

    B
    L
    D
Lying close to the northwestern tip of the Antarctic Peninsula, separated by the Bransfield Strait, the South Shetland Islands fall under the jurisdiction of the Antarctic Treaty, suspending claims on their sovereignty. Several countries maintain research bases here, and with plump elephant seals, and crowds of Gentoo, Chinstrap and Adelie Penguins also calling the islands home, it can even feel a little crowded at times.
These islands offer extraordinary adventure in one of the most remote locations on earth. The triple peaks of Mount Foster tower above the archipelago, and you’ll feel your heart pumping a little quicker, as you sail into the core of Deception Island’s magnificent collapsed volcano caldera. Hike the luna landscapes within, and even dip into the improbably warm, geothermally-heated waters of Pendulum Cove.

    Included Meals:

    B
    L
    D
Sailing the legendary Drake Passage is an experience that few are ever lucky enough to experience.
Connecting the Pacific Ocean to the Atlantic Ocean, this particular waterway is an impressive 997 kilometres wide.
The Drake Passage is famously choppy and sailing through it is often an exhilarating adventure, one that’s equal parts epic, eerie and magical.

There are plenty of activites offered onboard or simply relax as we head back to South America.

    Included Meals:

    B
    L
    D
This evening, we arrive into Puerto Williams for our final night on Silver Wind. A chance to enjoy a final meal together onboard.

    Included Meals:

    B
    L
    D
This morning we disembark from Silver Wind, and transfer to Puerto Williams airport for our charter flight back to Santiago.

Our tour ends on arrival in Santiago this evening. We will alert you what is the earliest fight time you can book to depart for your onward destination.

If you would like a connecting flight home or plan to stay on and explore Chile or other parts of South America, Selah can assist you with these arrangements.

    Travel health Expand

For travellers to Antarctica, severe low temperatures and high winds are the primary health hazards. Antarctica is the coldest, windiest, and driest place on earth. Temperature patterns vary widely because the continent is covered in continuous darkness during the winter and continuous sunlight during the summer, with a few weeks of sunrises and sunsets between seasons.

The effects of the sun in Antarctica (because of the sun’s reflecting off the snow) can be damaging to the eyes and skin, and protective measures should be taken.

For sea sickness there are ginger tablets on baord and we enourage you to pack medication if you are prone to sea sickness, particularly when crossing the Drake Passage. There is also a medical clinic and doctor on board should you need additional assistance.

From a mobility perspective, you need to be able to embark & disembark from a zodiac (inflatable dinghy) on the land excursions. The land excursions are usually 2 hours in duration and you can walk and climb in various areas at your own pace. You are welcome to pack or hire walking poles which are also helpful on the ice & snow.

Selah does not advise on travel vaccinations. Please consult with your GP or check out www.traveldoctor.com.au about relevant vaccinations.
