OVERVIEW
The Camino Walk has been a spiritual journey since the Middle Ages. Back then it was believed that if a pilgrim took the journey their sins would be forgiven!
Today the walk attracts people from all over the world, searching for purpose and meaning. As a group of Christians, this is an intentional walk wanting to engage with others along The Way. Invite others for chats at night or as you walk, share your story of faith.
There are many different Camino routes and for this tour we will start in Porto, Portugal.
The walk ‘ends’ in the town of Santiago de Compostela, where it is believed the remains of the apostle James are held in the crypt under the Cathedral. For this reason, the walk is known as the Way of Saint James (even though his remains came by boat!).
The scallop shell, found on the shores in Galicia, has long been the symbol of the Camino de Santiago, and is a common signpost along the path to guide pilgrims in the direction of Santiago.
Whatever your reason for walking you will be inspired by the beauty of God’s creation as you walk, you will encounter different people along the way and you will have Selah moments with God as you connect with Him on your walk.
We joined the Camino de Santiago tour in Spain. Lisa and her team could not have done a better job of preparing us for the walk, helping us with all our travel arrangements and ensuring that the entire group had a fantastic experience. Highlights for me were singing in a 12th century church in Portomarin, the deep trust developed within the group as we shared our struggles and joys, morning prayer together, walking down laneways with mossy trees, lovely meals, hot showers and especially time to reflect. The thrill of arriving in Santiago, and sense of achievement in managing the long walking days and receiving the Compostela certificate were great, but I think most of all it was the work God was doing in me and the friendships created in the group which will stay with me. Lisa Tarzia is the Director of Selah Tours and has walked the Camino Frances twice before.
She loves being outside, be it in the garden at home or hiking locally.
She has completed walking holidays in Peru, Nepal, Spain and Central Australia.
Lisa became a Christian at the age of 32 after the birth of her first daughter 25 years ago. A self proclaimed "Jesus freak", Lisa is known for her vibrant faith and sharing it with others.
She has led many tours and mission trips in her almost 40 years in travel. Lisa will be leaving at home her 3 adult daughters, a dog and a cat.

Transfer to the hotel in Porto (own expense but we can arrange or walk 800m) to check in and meet your fellow passengers.
Porto is a charming riverside city known for its colourful old town, rich history, and iconic Dom Luís I Bridge. Wander the narrow lanes of Ribeira, enjoy stunning Douro River views, and savour world-famous port wine in atmospheric cellars. Beautiful architecture, friendly locals, and delicious food make Porto unforgettable.
Meet at the hotel at 6.30pm for a meet and greet/orientation meeting followed by dinner.

The route is mostly flat and easy to navigate, with sea views nearly the entire way. You’ll pass spots like Matosinhos, Leça da Palmeira, and stretches of protected dunes. It’s a refreshing, breeze-filled day of walking, perfect for easing into the Camino rhythm.
Labruge is a quiet coastal town—small, peaceful, and a lovely place to end after a full but gentle day’s walk. Once everyone has arrived we will travel by coach to Fao for dinner and overnight.

You’ll pass small villages, farmland, and sections of boardwalk along the Atlantic. The walking is generally moderate, with a few gentle climbs and plenty of shaded areas. As you approach Viana do Castelo, the views open up toward the city and the striking hilltop Sanctuary of Santa Luzia.
Viana do Castelo itself is one of Portugal’s loveliest towns—full of elegant squares, historic buildings, and riverside charm—making it a rewarding and atmospheric end to the day’s walk. As we are overnighting here you can take as long as you need to walk today.

You’ll walk past rugged cliffs, quiet coves, fishing hamlets, and stretches of paved coastal path. The terrain is mostly flat and gentle, making it an enjoyable and steady day of walking. The dramatic Cíes Islands often appear on the horizon, adding to the beauty of the route. We enter Galicia, Spain as we cross the border near A Guarda / Caminha.
Arriving in Baiona, you’re greeted by a lively seaside town with a beautiful harbour, historic fortress, and inviting cafés—an ideal place to relax after a scenic coastal day.

You’ll pass small seaside towns, coves, and stretches of boardwalk with beautiful Atlantic views. The terrain is mostly gentle but includes a few undulating sections as you approach Vigo. Along the way, you’ll encounter local cafés and seafood restaurants—perfect for a rest stop.
Vigo itself is a bustling port city with a lively waterfront, historic streets, and excellent shopping. Highlights include Castro Fortress, the old town of Casco Vello, and the Ría de Vigo viewpoints, making it a vibrant end point after a day of coastal walking.

As you approach Pontevedra, the route opens to the town’s elegant streets and squares. Pontevedra is a highlight of Galicia, known for its beautiful old town, plazas lined with historic buildings, and pedestrian-friendly streets filled with cafés and local shops. The town’s serene riverfront and historic churches make it a rewarding endpoint for the day. Dinner not included tonight so you have the opportunity to explore local eateries.

Leaving Pontevedra, you’ll first navigate charming streets before moving into the Galician countryside. The route passes through small villages, farmland, and gentle wooded areas, offering plenty of shade and tranquil walking. The terrain is mostly flat with some gentle undulations, making it a comfortable day for most pilgrims.
Along the way, you can stop at villages like Curro and Ponte Cabras for a café or rest. Caldas de Reis is famous for its thermal springs and relaxed atmosphere, making it an ideal place to unwind after the day’s walk. The town also has historic churches, quaint streets, and local eateries.

Arrival in Padrón brings a lively pilgrim atmosphere and deep spiritual significance—it is traditionally believed to be where the boat carrying St James first arrived in Spain.

Leaving Padrón, a town known for its connection to St. James and its famous peppers, the route follows peaceful country roads, gentle hills, and forested paths. Along the way, small villages offer opportunities to rest and soak in local Galician culture.
As you approach Santiago de Compostela, the excitement builds with pilgrims from multiple routes converging. Enter the city through its outskirts, eventually arriving at the iconic Praza do Obradoiro, where the magnificent Santiago Cathedral awaits—a deeply moving and triumphant end to the pilgrimage.
Dinner tonight will be at a local restaurant.
