OVERVIEW

Join us on an unforgettable 17-day journey through the sacred landscapes of Scotland and northern England, as we walk in the footsteps of saints like Cuthbert, Aidan, Bede, and Hilda. Beginning in Edinburgh, this pilgrimage traces the peaceful paths of the St Cuthbert’s Way and St Bede’s Way, winding through rolling hills, ancient woodlands, and historic villages. We visit Holy Island (Lindisfarne), Durham, Whitby, and Canterbury—each a rich spiritual landmark in the story of Celtic and early English Christianity.

Led by a Bible-trained guide, this tour offers daily opportunities for prayer, reflection, and spiritual conversation (optional), with comfortable accommodations, daily breakfasts, lots of dinners, and local insights along the way. Whether standing in the ruins of Lindisfarne Priory or praying in Canterbury Cathedral, you’ll experience the quiet beauty of pilgrimage—where every step deepens your walk with God.

Rev Steve and Cath Neuhaus have studied and been involved in Celtic Christianity for many years, practicing this method of faith particularly through witness, hospitality and journeying with people as they walk the pilgrimage of life.  Steve a former police officer was ordained in 2004 years ago and has worked as an Army chaplain since. Cath is a mother, wife and Army logistics officer and has supported Steve in their varied ministries over the years as she runs children ministries.  Steve first visited the UK in 1974 and since 2005, he and Cath have visited the UK a number of times, travelling through many parts of the it.  In 2023, Steve and Cath undertook a Celtic Christianity Pilgrimage through Ireland, Scotland and England and in 2024 walked 315km of the Camino Frances in Spain.  Steve has long studied the Celtic Saints and the origins of Christianity in Britain as well as the ebbs and flows of this through the centuries.  Steve and Cath have visited Lindisfarne and Durham three times previously as well as Edinburgh, Coventry, Sheffield, London and Canterbury, these places being key sites for the development of Christianity in Britain over the centuries.

Highlights include:
• The Firing of the One O’Clock Gun, a daily tradition that echoes through the city – a reminder of both precision and tradition.
• A visit to St Margaret’s Chapel, the oldest surviving building in Edinburgh, built in 1130 AD. This humble yet sacred space was dedicated to Queen Margaret, a woman of deep Christian faith whose legacy of compassion and reform shaped the spiritual life of Scotland.
As we explore, we’ll reflect on the faith and resilience of those who walked this land before us, setting the tone for the days to come.

Today we begin our walk along the St Cuthbert’s Way, following in the footsteps of one of the great saints of the Celtic Church. Our journey takes us from Melrose, where St Cuthbert began his monastic life, to Harestanes, covering 24km of peaceful Scottish countryside.
As we walk, we’ll trace the early path of Cuthbert—a man of deep prayer, humility, and devotion. The trail winds through rolling hills, farmland, and forest, offering time for quiet reflection, shared conversation, and spiritual connection.
Along the way, we’ll pause to consider how Cuthbert’s life of service and simplicity speaks into our own spiritual journey today. Check into the hotel in Kelso for a 2 night stay.

Today’s walk takes us deeper into the Scottish Borders as we journey from Harestanes to Morebattle, covering 16km of the St Cuthbert’s Way. The path leads through peaceful woodlands and open countryside, offering ever-changing views and space to walk at a reflective pace.
We’ll pass historic sites and quiet villages, taking time to pause, pray, and soak in the beauty of creation. As the landscape opens up, we’re reminded of the wild and rugged faith of the Celtic saints—rooted in solitude, nature, and a deep awareness of God’s presence.
In Morebattle, we’ll rest in a place whose name means “dwelling place of the saints”—a fitting end to a day shaped by faith, fellowship, and the simple act of walking together. Return to Kelso by coach for dinner & overnight.

Checkout of our hotel and load up the bus with our belongings. Today’s stretch from Morebattle to Hethpool takes us across some of the most dramatic and remote landscapes of the St Cuthbert’s Way. Covering 20km, the trail includes a challenging but rewarding climb over the Cheviot Hills, offering sweeping views and a sense of holy solitude.
As we leave the Scottish Borders and enter Northumberland National Park, we cross into England—symbolically echoing St Cuthbert’s own movement between lands and peoples. This region, steeped in monastic history, invites us to embrace stillness, perseverance, and prayer.
With each step, we are reminded of the Celtic tradition of “peregrinatio”—a journey not just of the feet, but of the soul, seeking God in unfamiliar places. We are collected by our private cach and driven to our hotel for the next 2 nights.

Today's walk from Hethpool to Wooler takes us 15km through the rolling beauty of Northumberland’s moorlands and valleys. The path winds through quiet, sheep-dotted hills and ancient tracks, where the echoes of centuries-old pilgrimages still seem to linger.
This section of the St Cuthbert’s Way is gentler in pace but rich in beauty and symbolism. As we walk, we consider what it means to journey with others—supporting one another, sharing the road, and embracing both the silence and the stories that emerge along the way.
Wooler, our destination for our second night, has long welcomed pilgrims on their way to Holy Island. We arrive as part of that same stream of faithful travellers, continuing the sacred rhythm of walking, praying, and seeking.

Today we checkout, load our belongings onto the coach then continue our pilgrimage from Wooler to Fenwick, covering 19km through quiet countryside and open moorland. This stage of the St Cuthbert’s Way invites us to walk with intention, noticing the sacred in the ordinary—the rhythm of our steps, the rustle of the wind, the stillness between conversations.
As we draw nearer to Lindisfarne, the Holy Island, anticipation builds. The path leads us through peaceful farmland and past ancient sites where faith was once fiercely lived and gently shared.
Seahouses, a 20 min drive from Fenwick is our resting place for the next 2 nights—a quiet pause (Selah) before tomorrow’s sacred crossing. We end the day reminded that pilgrimage is not only about the destination, but about being present to God in every step.

Today we make a special journey to the heart of Celtic Christianity—Lindisfarne, also known as Holy Island. Weather and tides permitting, we cross the causeway to this sacred isle where St Aidan founded a monastery in AD 635, and where St Cuthbert later served as bishop and hermit.
This is a day to linger, listen, and be still. We’ll explore the ruins of Lindisfarne Priory, walk the windswept shores, and visit St Mary’s Church, a living place of worship where pilgrims have prayed for over a thousand years. There will be time for personal reflection, group prayer, and quiet exploration.
We return to Seahouses for the night, carrying with us the peace and blessing of this thin place—where heaven and earth feel remarkably close.

This morning we depart Seahouses and travel south to Jarrow by coach, where we begin a new pilgrimage along St Bede’s Way—a 20km route linking two ancient monastic sites: Jarrow and Wearmouth.
Our walk today follows in the footsteps of The Venerable Bede, the great scholar-monk of the early English Church. As we walk from the site of his monastery at St Paul’s, Jarrow, to St Peter’s, Wearmouth, we journey through a landscape shaped by prayer, learning, and devotion.
Bede’s life was marked by a deep love for Scripture, community, and the rhythms of worship. As we reflect on his legacy, we are invited to consider how knowledge, faith, and humility still shape the way we walk with God. We complete our day with a worship service at St Peter’s Wearmouth and then travel by coach to Sunderland for dinner & overnight.

HOTEL: Seaburn Inn, Sunderland

Today we travel by coach toward Durham, with a fascinating stop along the way at Chester Fort—a key Roman site on Hadrian’s Wall. Here, we’ll enjoy a guided tour of the fort, gaining insight into the lives of Roman soldiers and the early Christian presence that eventually took root even in these distant outposts of empire.
From there, we continue on to Durham, where the remainder of the day is free to rest, explore, or simply soak in the beauty of this historic city.
Durham is home to one of the most important pilgrimage sites in the UK—Durham Cathedral, the resting place of both St Cuthbert and The Venerable Bede. As we arrive, we find ourselves surrounded by the legacy of the very saints whose footsteps we’ve followed. Check in to our hotel for a 2 night stay.

Today is spent in the sacred surrounds of Durham, a city steeped in the spiritual legacy of St Cuthbert and The Venerable Bede.
We begin with Morning Prayer, either at the site of St Cuthbert’s original grave marker within the cathedral, or in one of Durham’s local Anglican churches—entering into the ancient rhythm of worship that has shaped this place for centuries.
A guided tour of Durham Cathedral will lead us through its soaring architecture and rich history, culminating in visits to the tombs of St Cuthbert and Bede—the two saints whose lives have inspired our journey. We’ll also explore the cathedral ruins, a testament to the enduring presence of faith through time.
The afternoon offers space for personal reflection and walking through the cobbled streets and riverside paths of Durham. We close the day by joining the community for Evening Prayer, giving thanks for all we’ve seen, heard, and received.

Today takes us south to Whitby, a picturesque coastal town famous for its dramatic cliffs and rich Christian heritage. Whitby Abbey, overlooking the North Sea, is where St Hilda established a monastery in the 7th century. Here, we’ll take time to explore the ruins and reflect on the role of the Celtic church in shaping England’s spiritual and cultural landscape.
After our visit to Whitby, we continue our journey to York, one of the most historically significant cities in England. Known for its stunning medieval architecture, York Minster stands as a testament to the Christian faith, with its magnificent gothic structure and beautiful stained-glass windows. As we arrive, there will be time to wander the cobbled streets of this ancient city, soaking in its rich heritage and contemplative atmosphere.

Today we embark on a travel day as we make our way from York to Canterbury, the final destination of our pilgrimage. As we travel through the beautiful English countryside, we reflect on all that we’ve experienced—on the saints, sites, and stories that have shaped our walk.
Arriving in Canterbury, we are greeted by the profound history of this ancient city, home to the Cathedral of Canterbury, one of the oldest and most important Christian structures in England. Known as the spiritual heart of the Church of England, Canterbury is a place of deep pilgrimage, where many before us have come to seek God’s guidance and grace.
The remainder of the day is free for rest or for beginning to explore this vibrant city of faith.

HOTEL: Canterbury Cathedral Lodge, Canterbury

On our final day, we take time to deeply reflect on the journey we’ve shared. We begin with a visit to St Martin’s Church, the oldest parish church in continuous use in the English-speaking world. This humble yet sacred place is where St Augustine of Canterbury began his mission to convert the Anglo-Saxons to Christianity, marking the start of a profound transformation in England’s spiritual landscape.
We then explore the ruins of St Augustine’s Abbey, the site where St Augustine and his followers established a monastic community, bringing Christianity to the heart of England. As we walk through the Abbey’s ancient stones, we are reminded of the enduring power of faith and mission across the centuries.
Our final stop is the magnificent Canterbury Cathedral, where we’ll have time to contemplate and pray in this spiritual home of pilgrimage. The cathedral, with its awe-inspiring architecture and sacred history, will be the perfect setting for our time of reflection, as we pause to consider all we’ve experienced, and how God has spoken to us along the way.
In the evening, we’ll gather together for a final closing service & farewell dinner, offering gratitude for the journey and for the deep connections made, both to one another and to God.
