Embark on a deeply meaningful journey through the landscapes where Jesus lived, taught, healed, died, and rose again. Our Footsteps of Jesus Tour is designed for devoted followers of Christ as well as those simply curious about the historical Jesus and the world of the Gospels.

Across Israel and Palestine, you will stand in the very places where Scripture unfolded: the shores of the Sea of Galilee, the narrow streets of Jerusalem’s Old City, the quiet hills of Nazareth, and the sacred pathways leading to the Garden Tomb. Led by experienced guides who bring biblical history to life, this tour blends spiritual reflection, cultural insight, and awe-inspiring geography.

Bishop Paul Barker 

Bishop Paul Barker is a bishop in the Anglican diocese of Melbourne and an Old Testament Scholar.

He has led several pilgrimages and study tours to Greece, Turkiye, Israel, Palestine, Jordan and Egypt.

He delights in people growing in their biblical understanding. Formerly, he was a Bible teacher in Asia, based in Malaysia, and Vicar of Holy Trinity Doncaster.

ITINERARY

Travel today from Australia to Amman, Jordan.

Included Meals: None

Upon arrival at Amman, you will be met and assisted through immigration and visas on arrival. Once all through and the coach loaded up, we will travel to Mt Nebo, the place where Moses got to see the Promised Land (Deut 34:1-2), and if it a clear and sunny day, you will too! We continue to our hotel on the shores of the Dead Sea. Check in and rest up before our welcome meeting at 6pm followed by dinner.

After breakfast and check out we will visit Madaba where we will see the remains of the mosaic map of the Middle East and Jerusalem and continue to Petra. Check in tour hotel and relax before a big day at Petra tomorrow!

Enjoy a full day to explore “the rose - red city” of Petra which from 300 BC was inhabited by Nabateans. Take a horse ride through the dramatic “siq” or canyon. See the Treasury, carved in the pink stone, and continue past the Roman theatre, the Corinthian Tomb and Palace Tomb to the Roman road. Climb up to the High Place or the Deir or Monastery. Dinner and overnight in Petra. After dinner there is an option to return to the Petra site for “Petra by Night” lit up with 1500 candles! (approx cost USD$45)

Farewell Petra and drive south to Wadi Rum (Wadi means valley). This valley is spectacular with an expanse of pink sandy desert and a whole network of wadis which you will recognize from the best known scenes in Lawrence of Arabia. There will be a chance to see some of the wildlife that still inhabits this strange terrain and to see the village of Wadi Rum, Jabal Burdah, and Jabal Kharaz. We will go to the Visitor’s Centre where we will pick up our 4-wheel drive vehicles and tour more of this beautiful landscape. Check in to our Bedouin style camp for a night under the stars singing songs by the campfire and enjoying Jordanian hospitality.

We farewell the desert and travel to Aqaba on the Red Sea where will enjoy a restful day where you can explore the city or maybe even enjoy a scuba diving or snorkel trip on the Red Sea (own expense).
No dinner included tonight so you can explore the Jordanian cuisine at a local restaurant.

This morning we will have an early start as we cross over to Israel at the Eilat border crossing and travel through the Negev Desert to Masada, the fortress stronghold of Jewish resistance to the Romans. Continue to Qumran where Essene enclave was and see the caves where the Dead Sea Scrolls were hidden, then continue to Bethlehem for our overnight.

Today we enjoy a local worship service in Bethlehem and meet with local Palestinian Christians for fellowship before visiting the Church of the Nativity and Shepherd’s Fields. We will shop for olive wood followed by free time.

Farewell Bethlehem and travel to Nazareth and see the oldest Church of the Annunciation with Mary’s Well. Go back in time with a visit to Nazareth Village, an excavated village dating from around 1 AD. The excavations have carefully renovated the synagogue and houses to give a unique insight into village life and agriculture, as it would have been at the time of Jesus. A short visit Cana, scene of the first miracle and visit the Church of the Wedding. Drive to Mt Tabor, site of the Transfiguration of Christ. Continue to Tiberias for dinner and overnight.

After breakfast visit the 1st century “Jesus Boat” found at Kibbutz Nof Ginosar. Then take the boat from Tiberias to Capernaum; there you will see an ancient synagogue and St. Peter’s house which was later converted into a church. Also, by the shore you will visit Tabgha - site of the miracle of the Loaves and Fishes. We will take time here for a praise and prayer meeting. Continue to the Mount of Beatitudes where the Sermon on the Mount is remembered. Driving around the Sea of Galilee we will visit the Ein Gev kibbutz museum. End the day with a splendid view of the Sea of Galilee from the Golan Heights beside Yarmuk River. Return to your hotel for dinner and overnight.

Farewell Galilee and travel to Megiddo overlooking the Jezreel Valley, considered the Armageddon of the New Testament, including a visit to Ahab’s tunnel. Then to Mukhraka and Mt Carmel for a spectacular view of the northern region. Stop at Caesarea, once the capital of the Roman province, and see the harbour from which St. Paul was taken to Rome. Finally if time permits, we will proceed to Jaffa, where Jonah set sail. Drive up the Judean hills to the holy city of Jerusalem.

This morning, we will have an early start to visit the Wailing Wall and Western Wall Tunnels. Visit the Temple Area with the Al-Aksa mosque and the Dome of the Rock where Abraham was going to sacrifice his son. Enjoy time to visit the Jewish Quarter. See the Cardo, the Burnt House and the Herodian Mansion. In the afternoon we will visit the Israel Museum. You can return to the hotel with the coach or stay longer and see more at the museum and take a tram back to the hotel. Why not visit the Yehuda market tonight for drinks?

This morning we will visit the City of David including Hezekiah’s Tunnel, the new Pilgrim Road and Pool of Siloam. The afternoon is free as many sites close by 2pm for Shabbat. Walk to the Western Wall before dusk to watch prayer time before Shabbat commences. Tonight we enjoy Shabbat of a lifetime dinner in a local family’s home.

Start with a spectacular view of Jerusalem from Mt. of Olives - Walk down the Palm Sunday Road and visit the Church of all Nations at the Garden of Gethsemane - Visit the Pool of Bethesda and St. Anne’s Church, traditional birthplace of Mary’s mother. Pass through Ecce Homo Arch, visit the Convent of the Sisters of Zion and see Jerusalem from the roof of the Austrian Hospice. Follow the Via Dolorosa, passing the Stations of the Cross to the Church of The Holy Sepulchre. Tonight we celebrate the end of our tour with a rooftop dinner at the Notre Dame.
