    OVERVIEW

The Larapinta Trail has been dubbed “Australia’s most beautiful walk”. The Northern Territory’s most famous long-distance walk, the Larapinta Trail extends along the backbone of the West MacDonnell Ranges in Tjoritja/West MacDonnell National Park. The track is split into stages of varying difficulty, stretching from Telegraph Station in Alice Springs to the craggy 1380m (4528ft) summit of Mt Sonder on the western fringe of the ranges.
On this tour we will cover “the best of” sections of the Trail, walking approximately 80kms in total.

Our walk is for those who love the challenge of a walk in a remote & beautiful place, to enjoy & be in awe of God’s incredible creation, to learn & understand more about our First Nations People and to end the day in complete comfort, with you walking into a brilliant established campsite with delicious meals included. All you need to carry each day is your water, snacks and a day pack.

This is an exclusive Selah group with a minimum of 10 and maximum of 15 people. There is no single supplement for solo travellers – each person gets their own tent!

    Karen Simpson

Karen lives on the beautiful Central Coast of NSW and in this season of now having 2 adult daughter's has discovered the joys of exploring and walking in God's incredibly beautiful creation. Karen did the Larapinta trail as a client with Selah last year and it was a highlight for her.

She works as a Hand Therapist which gives her the privilege of interacting and providing practical help to people in all walks of life.

Time in the garden and catching up with friends over a coffee or a walk are some of her favourite things. Karen worships at Coast Community Church and is part of the leadership team there.

Karen can't wait to hit the trail again 🤠

    ITINERARY

You must be in Alice Springs for a compulsory pre departure meeting this afternoon at 3.30pm at the Lone Dingo adventure store in town.

Note: Accommodation in Alice Springs is NOT included in the tour price

    Included Meals: None

We pick you up from your accommodation between 7-7.30am and begin our walk at the historic Alice Springs Telegraph Station, the official start of the Larapinta Trail. Please ensure you've had breakfast before the pick up (you may need to pre-purchase food as most cafes will be shut before 7am). From here the trail takes us west through witchetty bush, mulga scrub, and bird-filled shady woodlands. We climb high over exposed hills to the jagged outcrop of Euro Ridge, with expansive views over Alice Springs and the surrounding landscape, before descending to the passage of Wallaby Gap. After a stop for refreshments you take a quick transfer by bus to Nick's Camp. Nick's Camp is an exclusive award-winning camp, nestled in the bush with stunning views across the Heavitree Range and Alice Valley. Following your introduction to camp you will be treated to a spread of local bush foods prepared by local specialist Rayleen Brown.
    Walking Time: 5-8 hours

    Included Meals:

    D
From Nick’s Camp we continue west through magnificent, shady Bloodwoods and tall Ironwoods, the dominant trees on this narrow alluvial flat. We may catch sight of Black-footed Rock Wallaby as we approach one of the most important waterholes of the area, Simpsons Gap. A short transfer takes us to the stunning Standley Chasm where you will enjoy a talk about indigenous culture. All departures will journey into Arrernte country for a cultural conversation. After a delicious picnic lunch and a walk into the magnificent Chasm – a private reserve still run by the traditional owners – we transfer to back to our campsite.
    Walking Time: 3-5 hours

    Included Meals:

Today's highlight is the 5km walk along the crest of the high ridge leading to Counts Point. From here we have clear views of Central Australia’s western horizon to Mt Zeil (1531m), the highest peak in the Northern Territory, and Mt Sonder which marks the end of the Larapinta Trail. We can also see the huge comet crater of Gosse Bluff, a feature of the landscape for the next few days. We descend from the high ridgetop though mysterious stands of mulga trees. At the base of the ridge we follow a track of dolomite limestone toward camp; keep your eye out for fossil stromatolites under foot, one of the most ancient forms of life. Stepping off the main trail, we follow our private track to Charlie's Camp nestled in secluded wilderness at the foothills of Counts Point, named in honour of pioneering Larapinta guide Charlie Holmes.
Return to camp and spend the evening relaxing around the campfire while your guides prepare a scrumptious dinner.
    Walking Time: 5.5-6.5 hours

    Included Meals:

    B
    L
    D
This morning we enjoy the best side walk of the entire Larapinta Trail: Ormiston Pound. The Pound offers an immense variety of extraordinary scenery and is the perfect walk to complete our journey. We explore the upper reaches of the Gorge where we may see Rock Wallabies scamper about the imposing cliffs, and follow the track through scrub filled with native birds: Spinifex Pigeon, Budgerigar and Mistletoe Bird. Keep an eye out overhead for the majestic Wedge-tailed Eagle, Australia's largest raptor. This walk includes an unavoidable water crossing, through still, cold water. The water level varies throughout the season but can be up to 1m deep in the early season. The water crossing is about 20m across, and your guides will be there to assist - it is a lot of fun!

    Walking Time: 3-5 hours

    Included Meals:

    B
    L
    D
Your guides will have you up early this morning (2-3am) for our pre-dawn walk up Mount Sonder. Weaving your way up to the 1380m summit of this majestic mountain following only the glittering light of your head-torch, surrounded by deep and peaceful darkness, is a truly inspiring experience... and watching the sunrise from the top is unforgettable! Mount Sonder is the official end and highest point of the entire Larapinta Trail and as such we have expansive views across the entire vast landscape we have been exploring over the last few days. We descend to Redbank Gorge and can enjoy a great brunch back at camp.
We will also visit the Ochre Pits today. The pits consist of several layers of multi-coloured, layered rock that was traditionally used by Indigenous Australians in ceremonies and played an important role in the continent's economy, being traded with neighbouring clans and "countries",in every direction on the continent. The mine belongs to the Western Arrernte people and only certain men were qualified to collect the ochre. It was considered some of the choicest ochre – soft to touch, vivid, with a slight sheen to it. After the ochre was mined, it was ground and mixed with emu fat for ceremonial body adornment.
    Walking Time: 7-8 hours

    Included Meals:

    B
    L
    D
Today we take a side trip off the Larapinta Trail to a very special place: Memory Mountain.
Memory Mountain is a project that was initiated by the local indigenous community with the help of photographer Ken Duncan and his wife Pam, made this dream a reality in 2021, erecting a 20 metre Cross on top of the highest point.
We have permission to climb Memory Mountain with a local indigenous guide and spend time with the traditional owners/elders before returning to camp for our last night together.

    Included Meals:

    Accommodation Expand

Multi award winning exclusive eco comfort camps

Our exclusive, multi award-winning eco-comfort camps, they have be awarded the prestigious Northern Territory Tourism Brolga Award for Ecotourism in 2016, & 2019. Our exclusive eco-comfort camps are the best on the e Larapinta Trail and all of our trips are 100% carbon offset.

    Comfort but still camping

Nestled amongst the hills just off the Larapinta Trail, these camps offer a relaxing and comfortable stay in remote locations.

These camps, which are exclusive to our travellers, offer so many more comforts to traditional camping but still allow the camping experience. They are fully set up, so there is no need to worry about pitching or packing away tents. Each site has a large covered area in which to relax at the end of a day of walking, with lounges, dining table and kitchen.

Beside this shady communal space is our campfire, the perfect place to gather as the sun sets.

    Sleep in comfort

The safari-style tents offer plenty of room for two people and gear. Luggage should be kept in the tent at all times, preventing dingoes from taking shoes and other items. You sleep on a stretcher bed in a swag. The stretcher beds raise you 40cm off the ground and offer a firm, flat base for the comfy swag mattress. The swag is a 5cm thick foam mattress inside a canvas cover. We provide a cotton fitted sheet, pillow and pillowcase, which you keep for the entire trip. You can take your swag outside the tent and sleep under the stars if you are looking for that real outback experience.

If you book as a single traveller you will receive a free upgrade to your own private tent.

    Shower tents

Nothing says comfort in the wilderness like a hot shower.

Hot water is heated using a "Donkey" hot water boiler - an efficient and economical way to heat water. Guests have a 9 litre bucket of warm water to use in our shower tents, which run for 2 - 2.5 minutes.

Organic shampoos and soaps are included for your use, sourced from Dindi Naturals, a supplier of handmade soaps and body products that contain no toxic or synthetic materials. These are chemical free derived from environmentally friendly ingredients from areas of fair trade and sustainability.

    Toilet facilities

Our eco friendly camp toilets are water-free clean and airy amenities, and are exclusive to trekkers at our campsites.

These save 143 litres of water each day, thanks to their water-free system.

    Trail surface Expand

    Expect rocky, uneven surfaces

While the Larapinta Trail is a well-marked, well-defined track, walkers should still expect parts of the trail to be very rocky underfoot.

This may focus your concentration on avoiding stones, so make sure you train with some rock-hopping before you go to be comfortable with this type of terrain.

We strongly recommend investing in proper hiking boots with good support for both the foot and ankle.

The trail can be steep in some sections, which will require you to use your hands when descending or ascending, and is overgrown with spinifex in places, so gaiters or hiking pants are recommended. Walking poles are also really helpful.

There is not a lot of shade along the trail and you will be exposed to the sun for the majority of your walking hours.

    Food Expand

From bush tucker tastings to three-course dinners, see what impressive meals our guides prepare and cook up in the middle of the Australian outback on our guided Larapinta walks. A sample menu and FAQs about food and drinks on the Larapinta Trail can be found below.

    Food on the Larapinta

Our guides have remarkable outdoor culinary skills and pride themselves on the variety, quality, nutritional levels and presentation of their meals and their ability to cater to a wide range of dietary requirements when taking travellers on one of Australia's greatest desert trails, the Larapinta.

On our full-serviced guided walks, there is often plenty of fresh fish and meat-based main dishes as well as fresh salads on the menu.

A particular highlight on our trip is the authentic bush tucker tasting and talk led by local Indigenous specialist, Rayleen Brown. She leads a cultural conversation and presentation along with a bush food platter that showcases a range of dukkhas, native herbs and spices, bush tomato and more.

So where possible, we aim to incorporate a variety of native bush foods into our menu, such as spices (e.g. wattleseed), native jams, pastes and sauces from quandongs (native peaches), Kakadu plums, bush muesli or a delicious lemon myrtle chicken.

Below is an example menu of some of the food provided on our guided trips.

    Breakfast

Brekkie ranges from cooked to continental. Usually a selection of cereals, fruit, bread/toast and quality coffee and tea.

    Lunch

We usually have a picnic-style lunch with a wide selection of bread rolls, wraps, deli‑meats, sandwiches and salad ingredients to prepare a tasty lunch how you like it.

    Dinner

The main meal is usually a classic outback style meal such as grilled barramundi, camp‑oven roast, or perhaps a tasty stir‑fry or pasta dish.

This serves as a guide only as the menu will vary from trip to trip.

    Rooming Expand

Prices are based on a twin shared tents containing two single swag beds. If you are travelling solo there is no surcharge for your own tent - yay!

For married couples, there are two single swag bed - no doubles.

A single supplement surcharge will apply for the pre and post tour hotel in Alice Springs.

    Travel insurance Expand

It is mandatory to have travel insurance and it is strongly recommended to take out a policy at the time of paying your deposit.

Travel insurance covers you for emergency medical & evacuation costs, cancellation cover and a range of other events. For a quote and automatic discount click HERE

    Travel health Expand

The Larapinta Walk is a Grade 4 (Introductory to Moderate) walk. For more information on the Grading system click HERE

This trek involves walking 5-7 hours each day over rugged terrain with some steep ascents and descents. The trail conditions of the Larapinta Trail are rocky, rugged, hard surfaced and dry. While a number of sections of the trail wind through open plains, undulating areas and relatively flat country, overall, the trail is characterised by rocky, stony and mountainous terrain which can rise from 680m •above sea level to more than 1,200m along some sections.

If you have a pre existing medical condition or are aged over 70 years, you will be given a Medical Form to complete and have signed by your Doctor/s.

Suggested preparation: We recommend regular exercise 3 or 4 times per week (this can be cycling, jogging or walking) in the months leading up to your trip. At least once a week, you should walk with a weighted day pack (5-7kg) for several hours for leg strengthening and aerobic fitness. The best way to train for an active holiday is to simulate the activity you will be undertaking on the trip. Train for uneven terrain by finding a hilly, rough narrow bush track, and go for a lovely long walk in your trekking boots. We always make each day of walking optional so that if you feel that you are not up to it you can travel on the coach with the support team. Similarly for the sunrise at Mount Sonder, this is optional, but incredible!

    Booking and payment deadlines Expand

A non-refundable deposit of $500 is payable to secure your place on the tour.

The balance of payment is due on Friday 13 February 2026. An invoice will be forwarded to you prior to these dates.

Payments made by Credit cards incur fees (1.3% for Visa/Mastercard & 1.8% for American Express).  Direct deposits into our bank account & cheques are welcome.

    Account details:

If you are interested in visiting Uluru or King's Canyon after the walk, we can arrange a coach transfer and whatever you might like to do in Ayers Rocks. There are 2-5 day options, catering to a range of budgets. You could then fly home from Ayers Rock airport or return by coach back to Alice Springs.

Fantasic scenery, variety of fauna and flora, fun, caring travel companions, night sky and lots of delicious food.

The scenery, gorges, mountain views, Indigenous interactions, birdlife. Amazing night sky - loved sleeping outside under the stars. A really lovely group of hikers. Devotions very good.

Highly recommend Selah and the Larapinta Tour. So many pinch yourself moments in the magnificent Australian outback. An experience I will not forget. Thank you.
