In 1632, The Black Plague was on the cusp of a little town in Germany called Oberammergau. The people of Oberammergau made a vow to God that if he spared their town from the inevitable plague they would regularly perform the Passion Play as a sign of repentance. After this pledge, no one died, so the first Passion Play was staged in 1634. Now every decade, the play is performed in this town and transforms the whole village. As you can imagine, the Oberammergau Passion Play experience is on many travellers' bucket-list.
